The brothers Thomas Thornton and James Thornton were coal and shale masters, each with a wide range of business interests that they progressed individually, but also working in partnership on a number of business ventures, including the operation of at least three shale oil works. Following Thomas' death, James Thornton promoted the Hermand Oil Co. Ltd. (established 1885) to carry forward the brother's oil interests.
