Oil works:

In 1865, George Gray was described as a coal and lime master, residing at Levenseat. Following a sale in 1868, he became sole owner of Hartwoodhill Collieries, the Shotts Oil Works, the Levenseat Lime Works and the Levenseat Oil Works.

George Gray was also a shareholder in the Benhar Coal Company, who took over the Hillhouserigg (Shotts) oil works from him. In 1879, following the death of George Gray, the trustees of his estate petitioned against the wind-up of the Benhar Coal Company, being still owed considerable sums from debenture shares.
