Serving Hermand Oil Works

A mine at the outcrop of the Fells shale, supplying Hermand Oil Works. The workings appear to be linked to earlier Fells shale workings to the north (see Hermand Murray's Pool). The nearby staging and crushers seem also to have processed the output of Hermand No.5 pit.

Shale-field: West Calder district.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1894, showing the mine in operation.
