Inclined shaft

Serving Broxburn Oil Works (perhaps)

A site marked as "Old Shale Mine" on OS maps, lying about 350m NE of the site of Fivestanks farm. The site has yet to be identified on mining plans and appears not be associated with any known mineral reserves. There appears no trace of any railway route linking the mine to the nearby mineral branch linking many of the Broxburn Oil Company's pits to their oil works.

A substantial waste heap, and what appears to be the flooded entrance to an adit, survives in a wooded area.

Shale-field: Broxburn.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1897, appearing to show disused adit and a shaft.
