Description
black & white copy image of a shale miner's drawer filling a hutch with oil shale. He is wearing a 'peeweep' vest, a safety helmet and a closed electric safety lamp. The pit prop showing in the middle of the slide was usually referred to as being a 'leg'. This picture is a still from a promotional movie "The Scottish Shale Industry" produced by Scottish Oils Ltd in c. 1929. This film was made to draw attention to the industry at a time when it was threatened with extinction. Government intervention c. 1931 secured its immediate future.
