Circular brass container with screw on lid for storage of Carbide.
Used by Miners, circa 1950, initialled IS
Carbide cap lamps were widely used in shale mines between c1920 and c1950. These lamps produced acetylene gas by dripping water onto calcium carbide. Supplies of calcium carbide for refuelling lamps during a shift were carried in sturdy, watertight containers like this, which could be slipped into a jacket pocket
