The Pumpherston Shale Company is listed in valuation rolls as occupiers and tenants of minerals at Pumpherston, and of shale works, tramway and workmen's houses at Pumpherston. Nothing more is known of this firm

The Pumpherston Shale Co. listings are separate from those of the Stankyards oil works operated by local landowner Peter McLagan. A statement by Primrose (in "Strathbrock - or the history and antiquities of Uphall parish (1898)) indicates that McLagan constructed a small works prior to that at Stankyard, this might refer to the works of the Pumpherston Shale Co.
