One of the five major shale oil companies that survived to be merged into Scottish Oils Ltd in 1919.

The company was established in 1877 to take over many small works and mineral leases in the Broxburn area controlled by Robert Bell, who became Chairman of the new concern. Substantial crude oil works, refinery, and candle factory were constructed on the sites of earlier oil works, challenging the scale of Young's operations at Addiewell. The adoption of Henderson retorts, patented by the company, equipped the Broxburn Oil Co. to produce oil more economically than competitors. Production was further enhanced by the opening of a new crude oil works at Roman Camps in 1891.
