Success or failure of shale oil companies was often linked to the skills of the entrepreneurs, managers, engineers and scientists involved. In this section we aim to highlight the achievements of some key people who helped conceive, develop and sustain the Scottish shale oil industry from its beginnings in 1851 through to its closure in 1962.
