Background

Two small areas of workings in the Broxburn Shale, both closely associated with workings in the Fells Shale at Caputhall and all operated during the 1880's by West Lothian Oil Company The southern area, last worked in 1891 appear to be accessed by an adit close to the entrance to Deans No. 1 Mine. The smaller northern area, last worked 1886, was accessed by a pit 38 fathoms deep, perhaps the "No. 4 Pit" marked on the OS map.
