Background

One of a number of Addiewell pits exploiting the Fells Shale. The workings of Addiewell No. 5 Pit probably linked underground to Addiewell No. 1 Pit, Addiewell No. 2 Pit, Addiewell No. 6 Pit, and perhaps linked to workings at Tenantsmarch.

See "Early mines and pits in the Addiewell area" for further background.
