Property Sandford Oil Works, Lease of minerals at Kimmeridge

A company formed to work minerals on John Clavell Mansell's Kimmeridge estate, and manufacture oil at Sandford, on the site of the Sandford clay and pottery works. The firm substantially extended shale workings at Kimmeridge, from where Blackstone was shipped to various destinations for gas production. There is little evidence that much progress was made with oil production at Sandford, and the sale notice lists no items of oil equipment among the Company's brick, tile and pipe making plant offered for sale in 1887.

The firm is listed in the 1889 edition of Kelly's Directory of Dorsetshire under "oil merchants", Kimmeridge Oil and Carbon Co. Ltd. (manager Thomas George Whiterow) Kimmeridge, Wareham.
