George Bennie & Co.

Oil & Chemical Engineers of Kinning Park, Glasgow.

George Bennie & Co were the leading manufacturer of retorts and oil works equipment during the "Oil Mania" period of the mid 1860's, They quickly established substantial trade throughout Britain and overseas, serving both as manufacturers of equipment and consulting chemical engineers. The company was established in 1858 by George Bennie, son of James Bennie of Caledonian Foundry and continued until failure in 1885. The company's interests were then taken over by James E. Bennie & Co., oil and chemical engineers with an office at 212 St. Vincent Street, who remained in business until c.1894.

FAILURE

FAILURES. At a meeting of the creditors of George Bennie & Co., ironfounders (of which we believe Mr F. Coulborn is the sole partner), held yesterday, a state of affairs was submitted snowing assets equal Ito 4s 4d in the £1. The liabilities reached some £25,000, but of that sum only £5000 to £7000 consist of trade debts, the remainder being made up of money advanced by friends, personal relatives, it is said, rank for over £15,000, a good portion of which, it is added, was lost on unfortunate ventures on the pig iron market. The composition was not accepted and the meeting was adjourned.The Glasgow Herald, 8th May 1885

FATAL ACCIDENT AT KINNING PARK. …The building, which was formerly part of Messrs George Bennie & Co.'s Kinning Park Foundry, had been unoccupied for nearly ten years, and was in so dilapidated a condition after the recent heavy rain as to impair its stability.The Glasgow Herald, 3rd September 1892
