Scottish Shale Oil Industry Collections

Refined shale oil products

The Scottish Shale Oil Industry Collection held by Almond Valley Heritage Trust is a Recognised Collection of National Significance in Scotland.

The collection has been assembled since 1983 through public donations, purchases and a close working relationship with BP. It represents all aspects of the Scottish shale and coal oil industries and includes items covering all periods in the history of the industry between 1850 and 1962, including the legacy of the industry after this date.

Objects in the collection are supported by a wealth of paper records and ephemera and a substantial photographic collection and reference library. Together with the records owned by the BP Archive, which have been deposited on long term loan to the Museum, this comprises the vast majority of material relating to the industry that is known to have survived to the present day.

We are always looking for new items to add to our collection which help us to continue displaying, researching and interpreting this unique Scottish industrial heritage. Please contact us if you think you may have an object, document or photograph you would like to donate to the Museum.

We are working hard to continue to create further content for the Collections section. To date, the Museum Collections and Collections Survey pages are live.
